Credit Crunch Forces Christmas Cutbacks

Christmas may not be such an extravagant time in 2008 with over a half of Brits deciding to cut back on what they spend for Christmas this year.

A study conducted by InternetCashback.co.uk has revealed that 53% of Brits are planning to reduce their Christmas spend in 2008 compared with what they spent in 2007. In contrast, a study last year found that 80% of us would spend either the same or more than the year before which suggests we are changing the way we spend at Christmas and trying to reduce the cost due to the crisis of the credit crunch and recession.

Out of those asked by InternetCashback.co.uk, only 24% were planning on buying their Christmas presents on a credit card or with a loan and only 39% saved up during the year so that they could afford Christmas.

From those who did not enjoy shopping, the majority reason (28%) was because the high street shops were too busy and crowded which has seen a significant increase in online shopping for Christmas presents and a sudden increase in visitors to internet cashback sites which offer cashback on customers’ shopping as well as discount and free delivery codes giving the customer a better deal than shopping on the high street alone.

The survey found that 85% of us do our Christmas shopping both online and on the high street, with just 8% opting for high street only shopping and 6% for just online shopping. However, 91% of people stated that they would be more likely to switch to online shopping online if they were offered an extra discount or free delivery such as from a cashback website.

Karen Dalley, Online Marketing Manager at Internet Cashback explains: “Christmas is a busy period for retailers’ and always a time of financial strain for most. With the media constantly talking about the credit crunch it seems like people are finally starting to be more careful with their money and are trying to spend what they have rather than get into more debt which could see many retailers seeing a significant drop in sales this Christmas.”
