Women Can’t Live Without The Internet

October 9, 2008

The internet is becoming increasingly indispensable for women, with over two thirds (66.1%) saying their lives would be disrupted and hard to lead if they had to go without the internet for a week (Source: Burst Media, July 2007). 51.4% of women of all age groups used the internet to do their shopping in the last year, mostly for travel (37.5%), adult clothing (32.4%), health and beauty products (27%), children’s clothing (18.8%), financial products (15%) and groceries (14.9%).

The recent surge in online shopping means that the shopaholic can now do her shopping from the comfort of her own home and the busy working mum can now do her grocery shopping whilst sitting in bed after the children have gone to bed. Longer working hours and the increase in mums going back to work means that women do not have the time they used to for shopping and so online shopping is the best next thing and is now offering more benefits than high street shopping.

Cashback and discount code websites are now offering shoppers extra advantages to shopping online, such as free delivery, money off discount codes and a cashback amount on purchases from retailers including Sheilas’ Wheels Insurance, La Senza UK, Early Learning Centre online and Hamleys toy shop. Internet Cashback has found that 68% of its visitors are female which demonstrates that women are turning to online shopping to help them get more from their shopping. In this economic climate everyone is trying to be more sensible with how they spend their money and with what they get in return.

The increase in women becoming more and more dependent on the internet and using online shopping could mean high street shops will begin to start seeing a significant drop in footfall to their stores and the popular girlie trips to town on a Saturday will be a thing of the past replacing it being lunch time shopping at the office desk.
